Ganja & Hess, d. Bill Gunn (1973)
Every fable needs a ‘once upon a time…’ particularly a story as fragmented and time warped as this.
In reductive terms, the film is a Blaxploitation vampire film or, at least, that's what the producers wanted. Instead, they got something infinitely more complex and perplexing, sometimes impenetrable, sometimes interminable, but compensates with a sense of wonderful bewilderment. It's grasp exceeds its reach.
This blog really needs more Blaxploitation
and vampires. Lots more. Only I can make that happen, and I'm going to make that happen.
