1970 flyer for what turned out to be a very Ballard-ian exercise in the breakdown of societal behaviour. Drunkenness, licentiousness and public urination all featured.

EVERYONE'S A CRITIC

What I like about this sweet, clean seaside postcard is that the couple are not necessarily dismissive of the sculpture, they just don't know what they're looking at or how to engage with it. This may eventually make them angry but, for now, it leaves them perplexed and slightly embarrassed, a not uncommon reaction to the unfamiliar - and one that is infinitely preferable to some of the too cool for school pseudery that can pass for reaction when it comes to art.  

It's my birthday today. I'm fifty six, which seems ridiculously, farcically old. I can no longer tell the front from the backside.

HEAVY AND LIGHT METAL

Harry Bertoia (1915-1978) was an Italian / American painter, sculptor, musician and furniture designer. I'm perhaps most interested in his sonic sculptures, fascinating sets of differently sized metal rods, bowls and sheets that chime and resonate and create overlapping waves of deep, shimmering sound when touched, bowed or banged with a mallet, but I'm most familiar with his wire backed chairs, one of which sat in the corner of my room at university for two years. It was really uncomfortable, but I wish I'd pinched it when I left.

An irradiated monster stalks these islands. Nobody knows what it wants, but it's got something to do with children. This week it's in Scotland, but it's also been spotted in Orford, Weymouth and Porton Down. You can shoot at it all you want, it won't make any difference.
